NISHIO RYU
Nishio-ryu aikido refers to the body of techniques developed by the late Shoji Nishio Sensei, utilizing the breadth and depth of his experience karate, judo, wooden weapons and iaido. Each open-hand aikido technique is related to a bokken vs bokken kata and a jo vs bokken kata, and in most cases each set of open-hand techniques is related to a solo sword kata of Toho Iaia. In Toho Iaia, Nishio Sensei developed a set of 15 iaido kata drawing the sword, cutting and returning it to the sheath. The first and last kata introduce the student to basic cuts and movements. Thirteen of the kata illustrate the basic movements involved in O'Sensei's aikido techniques. Over time, study of these solo kata and the two-person kata with bokken and jo can help the student to understand and to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of his open-hand aikido.
